Today I went to the Millington Museum and listened to guest speaker Pastor Daniel McVey speak about WWI. AND IT WAS GREAT! (here is a button to the Millington Museum in case you want to see their upcoming events. ) I went with another Mayville volunteer you all know Marilyn Patterson. If you look at our pictures of the day you will see us wearing a German pickle helmet and another German helmet. I am torn between telling you all now the cool stuff he said or saving it for my upcoming WWI fundraiser book for the Mayville Museum. Mr. McVey was very informative and has tons of knowledge about WWI. For one thing his relative fought against the USA during WWI. Also it is really rare for him to have this Bayonet, which I felt and it is really dangerous. Mr. McVey has actual artifacts given to him from his relative. He has a WWI field desk, hand guns, costly trench art, medals, pictures, stories, uniforms, a mess kit, binoculars, rifles, a trench match, lots of stuff.
I hitched a ride with Karen Withers from the Millington Museum to go to this workshop, Karen ended up being really nice and living just down the street from me. The drive wasn't as bad as I thought, Port Sanilac Michigan wasn't as far, it just sounds that way. We sat at a table with David McDonald & Leila Misico of the Ten Cent Horse Barn in Ubly, Michigan. Here is a pdf of a brochure they are in. The Workshop was held at the Sanilac County Historical Museum & Historic Village, 228 S. Ridge Street, Port Sanilac, Michigan 48469. The first thing we saw was a giant beautiful yellow home, and when we pulled in the driveway, lots of buildings on the property. There were a couple speakers that really stood out for me and one was Ken Brock the Restoration guy. He had lots of pictures showing his range of expertise and his love of historic preservation. Another speaker that really stood out for me was Kate Van Auken, Cass City Historical & Genealogy Society. Kate gave a presentation on, "Cemetery Walk: A How-To For Your Community". I took notes as best I could on this one, that is how great she made it sound. All in all it was a good day and I liked every bit from beginning to end, I hope I get to go to another one.
Veterans
You Are Not Forgotten Pavilion The Mayville VFW is sponsoring and coordinating the construction of a 40' x 60' Veterans Pavilion on the grounds of the Mayville Museum. This site was chosen because we believe that we can best honor our Veterans by erecting a facility that will be well used by the public, especially children, educating all users as to the sacrifices that were made by our Veterans so that we can live in a free and democratic society. The museum has fascinating displays and spacious grounds that are already used for a number of events, such as an Easter Egg Hunt, school field trips, antique car show and a buck pole. Unfortunately, the museum lacks a pavilion type structure. The presence of a new pavilion will greatly increase the umber and type of events that can be held there. The spacious grounds and attractions of the museum, once the pavilion is completed, will make it an ideal place for family type events. Its attractiveness for school field trips will be greatly enhanced. The wall on the back of the pavilion will be designated as the wall of honor. For a donation of at least $1,000., a permanent plaque will be installed on the wall, denoting the donor and the Veteran or event being honored. For example, one plaque which has already been pledged will read “In honor of the soldiers of the 1st Air Cav who fought in the La Drang Valley, November 1965” Commemorative bricks will also be available for a smaller donation. We invite all persons, businesses, civic organizations, and VSO's in this area to donate to, or co-sponsor this pavilion project, Since the pavilion will be the property of the museum, which has a 501 C 3 designation, all donations will be tax deductible. We need $60,000. to complete the project. With pledges from the Mayville VFW and local individuals and civic groups, we are already half way there! Please join us in this effort to honor our Veterans. For any questions or suggestions, or a commitment to donate to this project, call Frank Franzel at (989) 550-2060.
